Catch the Wave with Ms. Todd!

October has been such a busy and fun month at Layer! Can you believe we are almost in November? We have seen so many great projects, experiments, and differentiated small groups happening in all classrooms. We are celebrating, too...from Trunk or Treat coming up on Friday, to recognizing student growth, and creating engaging experiences.... October has been exciting! We are ready to end the month strong with Red Ribbon Week spirit next week!

We appreciate your continued support and your willingness to partner with us so all students can achieve! As always, please let us know if you have questions or needs!

Layer Teach-In

Parents, community members, and friends of Layer Elementary School, make plans now to be a part of Teach-In on Tuesday, November 17th. We are looking for community leaders to teach at least one class in this community-wide effort.

Teach-In is a perfect opportunity for parents, business leaders and community members to let students know we care about them. It is simple – join us on Tuesday, November 17 and teach a class or two – whatever your schedule permits.

Teach-In highlights the importance of bringing together teachers, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. We will do our part by giving you some suggestions to prepare you for this experience with an informative Teach-In Speaker Guide. Simply fill out this Speaker Registration Form.

You will not regret your decision to be a volunteer teacher during Teach-In 2026. We cannot wait to hear from you!

Friendly Reminders

Please remember that we want students ready for their best learning possible each day at Layer! We appreciate your help in ensuring toys are left at home so they are not a distraction.

Also, please remember to put your names on all jackets, sweaters, lunchboxes, and water bottles because our Lost and Found is overflowing.

Lastly, we ask that all students follow the SCPS Dress Code daily. Shoes should be safe for playing outside, shirts should not be cropped or  thin strapped, and hats should be left at home.

Simple Ways to Teach Self-Regulation
It takes practice, patience, and more practice!

Here are some simple ways to support your child’s self-regulation skills on a daily basis:
  • Teach & Model Empathy (understanding how someone else feels in a given situation)
  • Get Down on Your Child’s Level – Eye to Eye
  • Low & Slow Communication – Tone, Volume, Rate of Speech (speak slowly)
  • Give Them Time
  • Rest and Nutrition – Provide a Snack, Take a Nap, Drink Some Water
  • Breathe in the Fresh Air – Outdoor Activities (playground)
  • Breathing Exercises – Blowing Bubbles, Pinwheel Breathing, Balloon Breathing (pretend)
  • Read All About It Together (Social Stories, Books)
  • Listen Up
  • Create and Maintian Routines as Much as Possible
  • Any Rhythmic Activities – Walking, Running, Trampoline, Bike Riding, Coloring, Rocking in a Rocking Chair, Swing, Push the Wall
  • Provide a Quiet Space w/ Tools (NOT as a punishment)

5th Grade Egg Drop Supplies

We are seeking donations of "stuff" for our 5th graders to use to create a perfect vessel to bring their egg safely down to earth without breaking!

If you have any of the following items (or things like it), please send it in to school and have your student place it in the box in the front foyer! Thank you for helping! Make sure to watch the Layer Facebook page to see the 5th grade Egg Drop and which eggs survive the drop on November 20th!

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

We want to ask for your assistance since we want to keep our campus safe for all students during arrival and dismissal. Please check out the reminders below:
  • Thank you for making sure your child arrives between 8:05a.m.-8:35a.m. each morning! Tardy slips will be given at 8:35a.m. If your child is tardy, you must walk them to the front office to check them in.
  • Teachers open their classroom doors at 8:30a.m. and students transition from their holding areas. Students need the time to settle in their classroom as they start the day!
  • Please do not drop off your child before 8:05a.m. since there is NO supervision until then. We need all students to remain in their cars until the 8:05a.m. bell rings. If your child is a walker, please help their timing so they do not arrive to campus before 8:05a.m.
  • In the morning parents are encouraged to utilize our carline so that we can get students in safely. If you plan to walk your child to the front entrance, please only park in the main parking lot and cross on the cross walk. No families should be parking on the side grass area, the handicapped spots without a decal, or the bus loop.
  • The “Reserved Parking” spots to the left of the handicap spaces are for ESE students that may need support transitioning in and out of school each day.
  • As we are building routines, we ask that you check your student out by 2:30p.m. if you need to get them early. It is also helpful for the teacher to know your timeline so they can support your students and have their needed items ready to go. We want everyone to be safe and accounted for during our busy school-wide dismissal!
  • ALL people who are coming to check out their child must have an ID present for us to verify. We will scan your photo ID for safety purpose in the Raptor system. In addition, it is helpful if the teacher knows in advance that they will be leaving so the student can have their backpack with them if they are not in the classroom.
  • If you have any changes with dismissal, please call the front office before 2:30p.m. or notify the teacher in writing in the student planner. Emails/phone calls directly to the teacher might not be received before dismissal!
  • If your child is a car rider, please pull all the way forward so we can fit as many cars as possible on the line in the morning and the afternoon. No adult should get out of their car and students should be exiting/entering on the right side of the car.
  • We appreciate your patience in car line. Please DO NOT weave around other cars or staff members supporting the cross walk during arrival and during dismissal.
  • Our car line will be moving quicker each afternoon after the first week! Please be sure to be at Layer by 3:15p.m. for pick-up. It is helpful if you please leave your car sign visible until your child gets in the car. If a student has not been picked up by 3:20p.m. they will be brought inside and they need to be signed out in the office.
  • Any inclement weather announcements will be made through Parent Square.
