As you have seen in your child's take home folder and with information below, there are many ways to get involved as a family too! From PTA spirit nights, to Paint Night, and Trunk or Treat!

Parent Guide to Mindfulness

Research shows that just being in the presence of a calm, compassionate, safe adult can help kids calm down. As families, we can be “that person” for each other. At Layer, we start our morning with PRIDE time and have been building self-regulation skills with all of our students.

What is Self-Regulation and Why Is It Important?
  • It’s really a set of skills- a whole host of skills.
  • It’s about controlling the brain, controlling feelings as well as controlling actions & movement (behavior).
  • Self-regulation is the process that your child’s brain goes through that gives them the ability to control their behaviors and emotions in response to a particular situation.
  • It’s having the skill to calm yourself down when you get upset, to adjust to a change in environment or expectations, and to handle frustration without outbursts.
  • It’s the seed we plant in early child-hood that allows children to grow into adults who can manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • If we give children strategies to stay calm in stressful situations, they develop strong habits that they can apply at school, playing with friends, going to church, participating in sports, etc.
  • Building your child’s self-regulation toolkit requires thoughtful planning and understanding.
Simple Ways to Teach Self-Regulation
It takes practice, patience, and more practice!
Here are some simple ways to support your child’s self-regulation skills on a daily basis:
  • Teach & Model Empathy (understanding how someone else feels in a given situation)
  • Get Down on Your Child’s Level – Eye to Eye
  • Low & Slow Communication – Tone, Volume, Rate of Speech (speak slowly)
  • Give Them Time
  • Rest and Nutrition – Provide a Snack, Take a Nap, Drink Some Water
  • Breathe in the Fresh Air – Outdoor Activities (playground)
  • Breathing Exercises – Blowing Bubbles, Pinwheel Breathing, Balloon Breathing (pretend)
  • Read All About It Together (Social Stories, Books)
  • Listen Up
  • Create and Maintian Routines as Much as Possible
  • Any Rhythmic Activities – Walking, Running, Trampoline, Bike Riding, Coloring, Rocking in a Rocking Chair, Swing, Push the Wall
  • Provide a Quiet Space w/ Tools

SCPS Teach-In

Parents, community members, and friends of Layer Elementary School, make plans now to be a part of Teach-In on Tuesday, November 18. We are looking for community leaders to teach at least one class in this community-wide effort.

Teach-In is a perfect opportunity for parents, business leaders and community members to let students know we care about them. It is simple – join us on Tuesday, November 18 and teach a class or two – whatever your schedule permits.

Teach-In highlights the importance of bringing together teachers, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. We will do our part by giving you some suggestions to prepare you for this experience with an informative Teach-In Speaker Guide. Simply fill out this Speaker Registration Form.

You will not regret your decision to be a volunteer teacher during Teach-In 2025. We cannot wait to hear from you! Please complete this registration by Friday, October 25.

Attendance Matters!

Please send in your excuse notes for absences or tardies to LRES_attendance@myscps.us or log into your Family Skyward account. Please be sure your doctor's & excuse notes are in within two weeks of the absence so they can be entered properly! Excuse notes need to explain the family emergency or if your child is sick to be excused. After 10 written/emailed parent notes, doctor notes are required.

Pride Expectations

PRIDE Expectations with PBIS!

Layer is proud to be a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) School! We expect all students to follow our PRIDE expectations so we can keep our school a happy and safe place for all students.

We appreciate family support as we link all behavior choices to our expectations across our campus with our continued Lucky Bucks and our consistent Behavior Alert system. Layer follows a Heirachy of Consequences in every classroom which can be viewed HERE.

HERE is the Seminole County Public Schools Student Code of Conduct. These are the expectations that all students follow to keep our school happy and safe.

HERE is the Seminole County Public Schools Dress Code. We ask that all students have appropriate clothing and safe shoes to play outside in each day. No flip-flops please!
