History
Construction on Layer Elementary completed in July 2004. The school was dedicated in November of 2004.The Layer Elementary School community is proud to be named in honor of two outstanding educators. William (Bud) and Lucy Layer were both teachers in Seminole County who were highly respected by their peers. The growth and development of Seminole County Public Schools, and its recognition as one of the highest ranked public educational systems in the country, has been greatly influenced by such outstanding professionals. Lucy Layer graduated from Florida State University. Her teaching career began in 1949 at Oviedo High School. She contributed to the intellectual growth of our young people, as a math teacher. She eventually moved to Lake Mary High School and later joined Bud in retirement in 1984. Mr. Layer returned from the Korean Conflict where he served in the Coast Guard and came to Seminole County in 1955. He taught biology and coached basketball at Seminole High School. He served as president of the Seminole County Teachers Association before he became an assistant principal at Lyman High School. He later became principal of Milwee Middle, Teague Middle and Seminole High School. Many citizens and community leaders recognized his leadership as contributing substantially to the development of our youth. As a result, between 1972 and 1981 Bud served as Superintendent of Schools. The Layers were married for forty six years.Their only daughter, Dr. Laura Layer, is currently a pediatrician in Pennsylvania.

PTA
Our Parent teacher Association (PTA) functions as a means of communicating between home and school, sponsors educational programs related to school, and organizes fundraising for purchase of unbudgeted extras for our school. We encourage you to join PTA.
Dividends
We cherish our "DIVIDENDS". Dividends are parents and community members who volunteer to work during school hours assisting students and staff. We welcome your participation!

Comprised of parents and school staff, SAC develops and monitors the school improvement plan. The members are elected to the committee by their constituencies and serve for a specific period of time. Efforts are made to include members from all segments of the community for racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic balance. Anyone interested in serving on SAC should contact the principal.
